Meet a Mentee - Paul Eikenberry

Name: Paul Eikenberry
Position/Institution: Assistant Director, Trademark and Licensing, The University of Texas

Why did you apply for the ICLA Mentorship program?
To meet and collaborate with industry experts to further my knowledge of trademark licensing.

What do you hope to gain from the ICLA Mentorship Program?
I hope to gain lifelong connections and valuable licensing insight from all of the mentors and my fellow mentees within the industry.

What is the best piece of advice that you received during the ICLA Mentorship Program?
To form meaningful relationships with as many industry professionals as possible, on all sides of the equation (institution, licensee, agency, retailer, etc.).

What's one thing you learned because of the ICLA Mentorship Program that you may have not uncovered without it?
The ICLA is a highly collaborative group -- so don't be afraid to ask for help or advice when you need it. Licensing challenges are rarely unique across campuses, so it's likely other industry colleagues have navigated the same circumstances as your institution. The ICLA community is more than willing to help -- all you have to do is ask!

What key topics are you seeking to address with your Mentor?
Best practices on product sample requirements, internal royalties, one-time authorization letters, student-internship programs, retail vs. internal merchandise artwork, NIL merchandise, and pursuing/renewing federal trademark registrations.
